4/1/2023 0 Comments Boomerang amazon![]() Regardless, the Fire Phone and AVA launch was a big step for me personally I’d never worked on a smartphone voice assistant before. However, the Fire Phone was not a voice-forward product like the Echo the phone’s voice assistant was only one of its many features. The Fire Phone launched initially in the US, but then expanded to Europe in four more languages: French, Italian, German and Spanish. In a short period of time, we speech-enabled AVA to dial contacts, send text messages and emails, check weather, answer questions, show maps and directions, and search the web. I spent the majority of my time from fall 2013 through summer 2014 working on the phone assistant we nicknamed AVA, short for “Amazon Voice Assistant.” Since AVA used the same TTS (text-to-speech) engine as the soon-to-be-famous Alexa, my engineering team and I became very familiar with the sound of her voice. The next product launch was the Fire Phone. But it was still exciting for me, and it was the first launch of a speech-enabled product at Amazon. My involvement was minimal (there wasn’t much voice design required in a single turn, push-to-talk!) I mainly evaluated the experience and made recommendations after reviewing data from beta results. I worked on Fire TV alongside a team of extremely talented visual interaction designers. While this might seem trivial in a world where Siri had been on iPhones since 2011, it was a huge step for Amazon, and the start of their future in the voice space. In spring of 2014, Fire TV launched with a “press to talk” button that allowed voice search by title, actor, genre and category. I created Fire! And some other stuffįor those of you who don’t know, Echo/Alexa was not Amazon’s first foray into speech recognition and personal assistants. I started at Amazon Lab126 in Sunnyvale in October of 2013. I ended up interviewing, getting an offer, and giving notice to Volio (which shut down less than six months later). ![]() I was fascinated by Lab126’s startup-like atmosphere coupled with Amazon’s big company money and stability. Several of my friends and former colleagues from Nuance had recently started working there, so it was clear to me that Amazon was working on something related to speech recognition - I just didn’t know what. At the same time, my husband and I had just bought a new (more expensive) Bay Area home, and I was making very little salary in exchange for equity, as is common in Silicon Valley.Ī friend of mine invited me to a happy hour in San Francisco, hosted by Amazon Lab126. I was, however, concerned about the company’s long-term prospects. We had grown from five people to over fifteen in two years, launched a cool app with Esquire, won a DEMO God award, and I loved the work and team. While I figure that out, I’ll procrastinate by writing a few short pieces.īack in the summer of 2013, I was working full-time for a startup named Volio, creating voice & video iPad/iPhone interactions.
